A Statement from City Alive
As communities across America rise up against the senseless murder of yet another Black person, against marginalization and repression because of skin color, against inhumane police brutality, each of us has a duty. So does City Alive.
Together we must more vigorously engage in the complicated work of dismantling racism within ourselves, our organizations, and our society.
City Alive stands in solidarity with the Black community. We stand up against racial injustice and violence. We stand for the right of every community member to live a healthy and prosperous life, to feel safe, and to have access to ample opportunities—in Albuquerque, in New Mexico, and across our nation.
There is no economic justice without racial justice.
As we support and respond to this moment of social change, we will continue telling the stories of Albuquerque’s journey toward a more just economy, especially focusing on those directly from entrepreneurs, business owners, and leaders of color.
As a storyteller in our social change ecosystem City Alive contributes by sharing out community voices, experiences, histories, and possibilities through art, poetry, videos, and articles. This commitment to story is at our core.
Standing in solidarity, standing up against racism, and standing for what is right all require brave, committed, and sustained action. Along with action, justice also requires deep listening. This story work gives us an opportunity to listen and learn, and to share the joy, challenges, and dreams of entrepreneurs across our city with you.
In 2014, City Alive was created to bring organizations together to close the gap in business ownership and leadership in Albuquerque with a focus on people of color. Those who have joined City Alive believe that equity belongs at the center—of conversations, programs, and policy change. And collectively we work toward that end, year over year committing to action, listening, and transformation.
We commit to working on re-education and breaking down unconscious biases through our leadership team’s involvement in racial equity coaching and anti-racism work. And will continue to join forces for a future steeped in justice by taking action today, tomorrow, next year, and thenceforward.
